Addiction services are offered to people in prison across New Zealand. The type of support someone can access depends on their location, sentence, and individual needs.
How could it be helpful?
This support is tailored for people whose drug use is linked to offending (actions that have broken the law). If you are in this situation, understanding what may have led to your offending can help you to build skills, foster personal growth, and reduce the likelihood of offending in the future.
What you can access will vary depending on your location, sentence, and your individual needs. It can include:
- Screening and brief interventions to help identify and prevent problems from using drugs.
- Intensive treatment programmes.
- Drug treatment units.
- Cultural interventions like Hōkai Tapuwae.
- Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court
See the Corrections website for more information on these programmes.
How to access?
Some people in prison will be offered to join these programmes. In other cases, you may need to request it (e.g. through your lawyer).
