Why Rainbow SMART Recovery?
As Rainbow folks, we get that going to a new group or service can feel daunting. You might be unsure how open you can be about your sexuality or gender identity, or you might feel like you can’t talk about the specifics of your alcohol and drug use.
This regular meeting provides a queer-specific space where you’re supported and understood. Thanks to a recent grant from the Rule Foundation, we’ve trained a friendly team of ten LGBTQIA+ identified facilitators to run these SMART Recovery meetings.
Join our Rainbow SMART Recovery sessions, every Monday 6.30-8pm. Register now.
How does SMART Recovery work?
SMART Recovery is a peer-led approach to making changes. We support each other and help work through challenges. SMART Recovery is:
Practical: We focus on the week just been and the week ahead. We use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy strategies to help manage cravings and thoughts.
Flexible: Come once a month or every week – no requirement to sign up.
Peer-led: You’ll be in a group of people who are on a similar journey, including facilitators who have their own experiences of addiction and use.
Each session is 90 minutes long and consists of:
- A check-in round: How was your last week?
- ‘Work time’: Discussing challenges, wins, and sharing strategies that could help
- Check-out time: Reflections and your plan for the next seven days.

What does SMART Recovery stand for?
Self-Management and Recovery Training. It’s about putting you in charge of your own goals and next steps.
Is SMART Recovery a 12-step programme?
Nope. There’s no requirement to stop using drugs or alcohol altogether, and no requirement to believe in a higher power.
You can register for the meeting on the SMART Recovery website, or contact [email protected] for more information about our groups.
There are also a range of other LGBTQIA+ specific meetings available throughout Australia and New Zealand, every day of the week.
